Why Friendships Fuel Recovery

Uncategorized Nov 24, 2022

This may just look like me hanging out with two Dutch dudes, but the stories behind this photo are absolutely insane.

Let me explain…

When I was in Holland recently, I reached out to two recent DeepClean graduates – Josh (on the left) and Matthias (on the right) – to see if they wanted to get some people together that might be interested in the DeepClean message.

They thought that a gathering in Holland was a great idea and began to ask around, and sure enough it looked like people were interested.

The day came and we agreed to have dinner together beforehand. Meeting clients in-person is always a treat for me – and this dinner did not disappoint.

These guys had clearly been friends for a long time. You could tell from the way they were joking around and telling stories about each other’s lives that there was deep history here. It was fun to watch.

Then both of them began to share their transformation stories.

They talked about how their addictions crippled their self-esteem, their relationships, and their walk with God.

Yet now they:
-Are so much more confident in themselves
-Have tools to handle triggers and temptations
-Reference DeepClean material when they are counseling/coaching youth (both of them are well-known youth pastors in their area).

It took every fiber of my being to fight back the tears.

Then I asked them, “So how long have you guys been friends?”

“We’re friends because of DeepClean. We didn’t really know each other prior to doing the program.”

I couldn’t believe it. The whole “opposite of addiction is connection” thing was playing out before my eyes. Not only did these guys find freedom, they found friendship.

And it changed their lives.

They wound up gathering 40 young adults and leaders that evening and it truly was an unforgettable night.

So what do Josh and Matthias recommend to someone who is struggling and hasn’t been able to find freedom yet?

It was pretty simple actually…

Start

The worst case scenario is things stay exactly as they are. Best case scenario is you advance in your calling and become the person God made you to be.

And who knows…you just might make a friend or two on the journey.
